The Health Benefits of Trampoline Workouts
If you spent any portion of your childhood bouncing on a trampoline, you know just how fun it is. (And if you didn’t, well, you’re still missing out!) But what you probably don’t know is that bouncing on a trampoline can be a lot more than just fun—it can be a great workout. So great, in fact, that it leaves a lot of other exercise methods in the dust. Here’s why.
1. It strengthens bones and joints while protecting them.
Each bounce on average is twice the force of gravity—the extra pressure on your bones and joints allows you to develop a stronger musculoskeletal system. Now, you might be thinking, “I’m pounding the ground pretty hard when I run,” and that’s true. However, while you’re putting pressure on your bones, you’re also causing repetitive, jarring impact, and that’s not good for your bones. Trampolines provide both the necessary push against gravity and they absorb harmful impact.
2. A stronger core (and better balance).
Your legs might be doing the jumping, but you soon learn that the rest of your body isn’t idle. That’s especially true in an organized fitness class at a local trampoline park , or while working with a personal trainer on your own trampoline and trying different exercises. While you’re jumping, you’re also concentrating on staying upright, how you move your arms and of course, keeping your balance when you land. All of that improves your overall coordination and results in a stronger core.
3. Increased leg strength while getting great cardio.
No other cardio activity is as exceptionally efficient at increasing your leg strength as trampoline work. And while you could pump iron to boost your leg strength, you’d still have to do cardio separately to get the same excellent results.
4. It’s great for your mood.
Yes, mood enhancing is most definitely a health benefit! First, there’s the fact that your improved circulation is feeding your brain lots of fresh, much-needed oxygen, which is healthier in and of itself—feeling more chipper and alert is a side effect! But there’s more to it than that. Trampoline jumping is a joyful activity, and as such it releases endorphins. Endorphins are your brain’s own natural “feel good” chemicals, and they’re instrumental in reducing stress (and blood pressure), fighting depression and even losing weight.
5. It’s more fun than other exercises.
Yep, this is also a health benefit and it’s a separate one. Studies actually show that although trampoline jumping increased the heart rates of normally sedentary women at the same rate as other exercises, the trampoline jumpers didn’t feel like they were exerting themselves. Why? Because they were having a great time! Now, which exercise is one you’ll keep doing—the one that puts a smile on your face, or the one you dread? And which one is healthier for you—the one you do, or the one you avoid? Exactly!
